About the Temporary Tax Credit
The temporary tax credit for first-time home buyers was enacted as part of the Housing Stimulus Bill signed into law by President Bush on July 30, 2008. Known as The Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, the bill provides eligibility for first-time home buyers who purchase a home on or after April 9, 2008 and before July 1, 2009 to receive a tax credit of up to $7,500. The amount of credit given is 10% of the cost of the home, not to exceed $7,500.
Single taxpayers with incomes up to $75,000 and married couples with incomes up to $150,000 are eligible for the tax credit. Home buyers will be required to repay the credit to the government, without interest, over 15 years or when they sell the house, if there is sufficient capital gain from the sale.
